Обсуждение: [JDBC] postgresql-jdbc driver not respecting prepareThreshold=0
I am running an application in wildfly 9.0.2 using postgres 9.2.19 databases accessed through pgBouncer 1.7.2 in transaction pooling mode. With recent versions of postgresql-jdbc, the application is failing with prepared statement does not exist errors. The database connections have preparedThreshold set to 0 as documented in the pgBouncer FAQ (https://pgbouncer.github.io/faq.html#how-to-use-prepared-statements-with-transaction-pooling). This works with postgresql-jdbc versions 9.4-1205 and 9.4.1208. It does not work in any version since 1208. I would like to keep packages up-to-date, so any help is much appreciated. Packages are centos 6, pgdg 9.2, and wildfly .tar.gz. Stack traces and configuration follow below. Thanks, Malcolm Studd The stack trace from 9.4.1212. Hi Malcolm,
I've posted this as an issue https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/issues/742
I hope to have some time to look at this today

The database connections have preparedThreshold set to 0 as documented in the pgBouncer FAQ (https://pgbouncer.github.io/faq.html#how-to-use-prepared-st atements-with-transaction-pool ing).
This works with postgresql-jdbc versions 9.4-1205 and 9.4.1208. It does not work in any version since 1208.
I would like to keep packages up-to-date, so any help is much appreciated. Packages are centos 6, pgdg 9.2, and wildfly .tar.gz.

Hi Malcolm,
I've posted this as an issue https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/issues/742
I hope to have some time to look at this today
On 2 February 2017 at 17:22, Malcolm Studd <malcolm.studd@tradingcentral.com> wrote:
I am running an application in wildfly 9.0.2 using postgres 9.2.19 databases accessed through pgBouncer 1.7.2 in transaction pooling mode. With recent versions of postgresql-jdbc, the application is failing with prepared statement does not exist errors.
Stack traces and configuration follow below.
Thanks,
Malcolm Studd

I think the fix has already been merged in https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/690
Malcolm, could you please test if pgjdbc 42.0.0-SNAPSHOT works for you?
Dave,
TL;DR: I suggest to review "feat: use java.util.logging", test it, merge it and release the resulting artifact as pgjdbc 42.0.0
Are there any concerns regarding that plan?
As far as I see, 42.0.0 has already go great number of features/fixes merged: https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/milestone/6?closed=1
There is "just one" known issue: "wrong statement gets used when app code uses different bind types for the same placeholder" https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/674
I would consider it more of an application issue, as it is not that good idea to reuse exactly the same statement with different bind types.
I did try to review and test the PR a couple of times, however I do not feel it is ready to be merged. It is likely there exist other edge cases that might need treatment.
There's a set of other great PRs, however I think it is better to release 42.0.0 now, and review/merge other PRs afterwards.

I think the fix has already been merged in https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/690 Malcolm, could you please test if pgjdbc 42.0.0-SNAPSHOT works for you?
Dave,TL;DR: I suggest to review "feat: use java.util.logging", test it, merge it and release the resulting artifact as pgjdbc 42.0.0Are there any concerns regarding that plan?
I haven't had a good look at it. Does the old way of enabling it work ? Does anyone care ?
As far as I see, 42.0.0 has already go great number of features/fixes merged: https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/milestone/6? closed=1 There is "just one" known issue: "wrong statement gets used when app code uses different bind types for the same placeholder" https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/pull/674 I would consider it more of an application issue, as it is not that good idea to reuse exactly the same statement with different bind types.I did try to review and test the PR a couple of times, however I do not feel it is ready to be merged. It is likely there exist other edge cases that might need treatment. There's a set of other great PRs, however I think it is better to release 42.0.0 now, and review/merge other PRs afterwards.
I think that would be a great idea.
Vladimirпт, 3 февр. 2017 г. в 15:00, Dave Cramer <pg@fastcrypt.com>:Hi Malcolm,I've posted this as an issue https://github.com/pgjdbc/pgjdbc/issues/742 I hope to have some time to look at this todayOn 2 February 2017 at 17:22, Malcolm Studd <malcolm.studd@tradingcentral.com> wrote: I am running an application in wildfly 9.0.2 using postgres 9.2.19 databases accessed through pgBouncer 1.7.2 in transaction pooling mode. With recent versions of postgresql-jdbc, the application is failing with prepared statement does not exist errors.
The database connections have preparedThreshold set to 0 as documented in the pgBouncer FAQ (https://pgbouncer.github.io/faq.html#how-to-use-prepared- statements-with-transaction- pooling).
Thanks,
Malcolm Studd

Thanks,
Malcolm Studd

Hi Dave, the old way of enabling it do not work. Maybe we can start a new thread
asking if anyone care, I really hope that nobody cares, since it have the potential of break compatibility if someone is using the old way for something more than debug localy.

Sorry for not looking this up myself, but have you provided an updated documentation patch then ?

Well, apart from the connection parameter in https://jdbc.postgresql.org/documentation/head/connect.html there is no section about logging, let me send a patch for that with the new connection properties (there are already updated in the README.md).
BTW, I think that the documentation (and the website in general) is getting outdated, after the release maybe someone focus on a fresh site.
Maybe this have been asked before, but, is not better to have the documentation along with the driver? maybe use the standard /docs folder so it's easier to use GitHub Pages.

The patch would have to be against the www site.
I'm not in favour of moving it to github. It is owned by the postgresql group, and should remain there.

Maybe I express me bad, I'm not saying to move the hosting to GitHub, I mean to move the www/documentation/head into pgjdbc/docs. that probably would require a 2 step generation and publish of the documentation (I'm not aware of the current process of the update to jdbc.postgresql.org) but it will simplify a lot making a single PR with a change and update to documentation, and "additionally" contributors can enable GitHub pages for their forks to see real changes made to docs.

The current process is manual, I have to do it, as I am the only one who has access to the machine that hosts jdbc.postgresql.org
I'm in favour of moving it.

Great, in that case, can you please merge https://github.com/pgjdbc/www/pull/41 to prepare a PR for the move?

Malcolm, could you please test if pgjdbc 42.0.0-SNAPSHOT works for you?
I couldn't find the snapshot, but I manhandled the postgresql-jdbc-9.5.git-1.20170202_221753.git8437f6c.fc26. noarch.rpm from the Fedora copr repo onto the box.
I am happy to report that the app is working with that build.
Thanks,
Malcolm
