Introducing 2UDA, 2ndQuadrant’s Unified Data Analytics

Dear www team,

Allow me to introduce 2UDA, 2ndQuadrant’s Unified Data Analytics application suite that centers around PostgreSQL 9.5. It unifies databases, spreadsheets, data mining and visualisations in one seamless desktop installer available for Windows, OSX, & Linux. You can find more details here: http://2ndquadrant.com/en/resources/2uda/

2UDA is designed to offer data analysts a complete working stack containing PostgreSQL and a data mining tool (Orange) that fully utilises the latest 9.5 features. Utilizing the new tablesample feature, as an example, it can create visualizations for important statistics very quickly for very very large data sets.

We offer 2UDA as a means of expanding the audience who may wish to download PostgreSQL and utilise its latest features, so hope to list this package on the PostgreSQL downloads page.

Please free to let me know if you have any concerns or any questions related to 2UDA and its possible listing on the page. I would be happy to explain and answer all your queries.

Thanks!

Hello!

Adding entries to the software catalogue is self-service - just go to http://www.postgresql.org/download/product-categories/ and fill out the linked form.

Hello!

Thanks Magnus. The software catalogue is aimed at associated software. 2UDA is a new distribution of PostgreSQL, aiming to expand and widen the number of people interested in downloading PostgreSQL. Given that goal, we would like to see 2UDA listed on the downloads page under Core/ 3rd Party, not in the catalogue. Can you help?

There is obviously some room for interpretation here. But I think
something that is listed as a PostgreSQL distribution should track
PostgreSQL releases in schedule and versioning. For example, I should
be able to see, where is the latest PostgreSQL 9.4 release of this or
that distribution. I can do that for the listed Live CD and BigSQL
distributions, for example. However, by that standard, the Bitnami and
Turnkey listings should be removed. I have no idea without digging very
deep what version of PostgreSQL they are shipping and how they are
updating it. Just bundling some random version of PostgreSQL with some
other software and setup scripts and calling it MyProduct 1.5 doesn't
make it a PostgreSQL distribution. There could very well be a need for
a new category in the software catalog called "PostgreSQL integrated
software bundles" or something like that.

The previous criteria we've used is that packages listed in the
PostgreSQL Core Distribution section are a) "core PostgreSQL", e.g.
community PostgreSQL, perhaps with one or more of the surrounding
projects (pgAdmin, PostGIS, drivers etc), and b) strictly follow the
PostgreSQL release schedule and support lifecycle.

Other packages in the "3rd party distributions" are subject to less
stringent criteria; e.g. they are more specialised in the software
they bundle (e.g BigSQL) - but still include community PostgreSQL -
and don't necessarily follow the release schedule and support
lifecycle. I believe this is the appropriate section for 2UDA, if
folks think it should be included.

Perhaps I can provide some context here.

2UDA installs PostgreSQL 9.5, but no earlier version. It installs with Orange, a data mining tool that has significant architectural modifications to make it work very well with PostgreSQL on large databases, and PostgreSQL 9.5+ specifically. As a result, no earlier versions are supported/supportable.

The work is the output of the AXLE project, which has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement no FP7-318633.  http://axleproject.eu

I am personally responsible for the delivery of the AXLE project, as Technical Coordinator, though the project brings together many other companies as partners. As a result of my close personal involvement, I can confirm that the EU is very much behind PostgreSQL, as well as other open source projects. I hope we can agree it's a good thing to publish one of the project's deliverables here. Other deliverables are already committed into 9.4 - 9.6, with more to come later.

2ndQuadrant has committed to strictly following the PostgreSQL release schedule and support lifecycle, even after the end of the AXLE project. Specifically, I mean that 9.5 version will be supported for 5 years, and later versions will also be supported when available, also for 5 years.

Sorry for an off topic question. How can I update an entry? I want to
update pgpool-II's entry.

I'm also wondering how to input the "Publisher" section. It seems
"Organization" section in the form is related to "Publisher" but
there's no choice in the menu other than "---------".

Top post: Dear www team,

This to notify you that we have repackaged and updated the 2UDA installers at 2ndQuadrant’s download page (www.2ndquadrant.com/2uda) with PG’s 9.5 Beta2 release. We have also incorporated Peter’s suggestion and labeled 2UDA with the PostgreSQL version bundled within it. As newer versions become available, we will continue to show the same diligence in packaging and maintaining 2UDA releases for people interested in Big Data analytics using PostgreSQL.

Thanks!

Thanks Dave, sounds good. We will be glad to have 2UDA listed as a 3rd Party Distribution. Here's a patch ...
