Hi

i have installed on my standalone pc all postgres packages with yast2. now when i start postgres then i receive the
messagesthat postgres can not find the needed files. 

who knows, which system variables have to set and how to do it.

(Just an FYI for those who don't know, this is a suse system).

Does it say which files it can't find? Check /var/log/messages for starters.

It's also important to know, which RPMs you installed.
Was it the ones the come with the SuSE distribution or did you get
them frome elsewhere?

Eg, I gave the RH 7.1 RPMs a try, but ended up with problems that
just could be described exactly the same way you describe yours.

(BTW, I use SuSE 7.2)

There is no such thing as Linux 7.1...

Linux is currently at version 2.4.6, several distributions are at version
7.1 includeing RedHat and Slackware (recently gone to version 8.0) but
neither of these use yast2 to my knowledge.
