A small analysis at freshmeat.net
MySQL and PostgreSQL share the 9th and 10th rankings at freshmeat most
popular * projects.
The margin is minimal and this is good, bear in mind that competitors
are non rdbms related projects.
While the popularity seems to be a close battle, the "Rating / Rate"
measurement is hosting PostgreSQL at the 22th ranking, being MySQL the
number 336th!!!

How do you measure popularity?

The popularity score superseded the old counters for record hits, URL
hits and subscriptions. Popularity is calculated as
((record hits + URL hits) * (subscriptions + 1))^(1/2)
