I understand now

We're going with PostgreSQL. Period. I'd like to thank the people who
responded. They were astonishing for a couple reasons:
1. Their speed at responding
2. Their passion
3. Their knowledge

A couple answered my question about some big names who use Postgres. Most
though, let me know that I was asking the wrong question. Just because
others do things a certain way, does not mean that it's the right thing for
everyone. In particular, the data integrity weaknesses of MySQL made a big
impression on everyone.

We are a Windows shop, moving to Linux. Our program's appearance and who we
are associated with counts for a lot in that world. This world of Linux is
a little different.

I think we'll like it.

Great.

One way on which you can assist the project in the future is by putting
together a case study of your experiences with your migration project
(good and bad) as well as a guide for those migrating from Fox pro. As you
can see, that kind of information is extremely useful and as a guide on
the web site would be available to all.

Thanks,

Gavin

Hey Bruce,

If your interested in a bit more about MySQL's integrity weaknesses,
have a look at this:

And note that the fact that Bruce may feel like a bit of a novice does
NOT hurt the value of this; nay, it _increases_ the value of such a
guide.

A "novice's guide" is, in fact, best written by a novice, albeit
hopefully with some guidance from experts. Experts are not likely to
stumble over the same things as novices. In particular, it is likely
that diverse "FoxPro people" will stumble over many of the same
things.

Pointing out stumbling blocks is a useful thing...

I'm hoping to get some foxpro -> postgresql information up on techdocs
real soon now, but in the mean time check out
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-general/2004-05/msg00092.php for
some conversion scripts. What might be helpful to others is a narrative
to go along with them, I think the original author is only planning to
post the scripts. Hope this helps.
