Hmmm ... I'll try both solutions tommorrow.  That is, I'll see if they portacross databases ...

Not very good.  A lot of stuff, like subselects in the SELECT line, is notsupported.    And MS has gotten further from
theSQL standard with each updatesince SQL Server 7.0 ...
