It introduces new environment variables which change the behaviour, but behaves the old way in the absence of those variables. So I guess it's not changing the default behaviour in incompatible way. BTW, does the project publish the feature-freeze deadlines and other dates somewhere (apart from on this list). I was looking the other day and didn't find any reference. Either the commitfest app or the 'Developer' section of the wiki [1] seem to be good candidates for this kind of information.
