So what do you get when you do?:

SELECT
       cid,
       title,
       description,
       can_join::BOOLEAN,
       (SELECT label FROM _locations WHERE loc=location) AS location,
       ('[' || starts || ', ' || (starts + INTERVAL '4 HOUR') ||
']')::TSTZRANGE AS duration
     FROM
       _series
   );
