Should I ask in the general list? > I hope this helps: as a beginner there is not much I could say that hasn't already been written; so, according to what I gather from the documentation (http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.2/static/auth-methods.html#AUTH-IDENT) the exact method used depends on the connection type (tcp/ip, socket) and also on whether all PostgreSQL users are the same as the OS users. I suggest you read the previous link, it is quite informative; you might also want to read your pg_ident.conf file.
