Recent versions have a "Unix compatibility" API, but, it's standard
API is quite proprietary.  And rich.  The complete documentation
comes (well, came, before PDF & html) on a *pallet*, and is called
the Big Grey Wall for a reason.  A truly awesome sight.  And
extremely well written.
