If you want to add null values, use: SELECT coalesce(surname,'') || ', ' || coalesce(firstname,'') || ' ' || coalesce(secondname,'') as fullname> FROM person Remember - NULL value means that value doesn't exist, so you can't add "not existence" to other existing values.
