Is it better to use pg_ctl to shutdown postmaster rather than 'kill -9'? If so, perhaps the INSTALL file should be updated, as it suggests using 'kill `cat /usr/local/pgsql/datapostmaster.pid`' to shut it down. Your message says that's tip #4; where can I find the others? Thanks for all your help, Tom. This is expected behavior.
