Yes, and not really. Modems have very very very small buffers, so the compression is extremely ineffectual. Link-level compression can be *highly* effective in making client/server communication snappy, since faster processors are tending to push the speed bottleneck onto the wire. We use HTTP Content-Encoding of gzip for our company and the postgis.refractions.net site, and save about 60% on all the text content on the wire. For highly redundant data (like result sets) the savings would be even greater.
