The idea of running scripts in between the "real" client and the database that is ostensibly handling the presumably valuable data makes me airsick. Anything that you could do in such a script, you could do with a stored procedure, and you'd get the benefits of ACID along with it. I have to agree with whoever it was upthread who suggested that this is a MySQL-ish way of getting access to capabilities PostgreSQL has had for some time (and, as usual, in a more usual, safer, complete way).
