AYUDA CON LA INSTALACION DEL POSTGRESQL

Inicie la instalacion del PostgreSQL 7.3.10 como dice
el install:

./configure
gmake
su
gmake install
adduser postgres
mkdir /usr/local/pgsql/data
chown postgres /usr/local/pgsql/data
su - postgres
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/initdb -D /usr/local/pgsql/data
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/postmaster -D
/usr/local/pgsql/data >logfile 2>&1 &
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/createdb test
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/psql test

Pero al llegar a la penultima linea me sale:
[postgres@C41-13 postgres]$
/usr/local/pgsql/bin/createdb test
psql: could not connect to server: No existe el
fichero o el directorio
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket
"/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
createdb: database creation failed

Que es lo que debo hacer?
