create the sequence first. The sequence might be like create sequence Category_category_id_seq ; CREATE TABLE Category ( category_id int4 unique default nextval('Category_category_id_seq') not null, "name" varchar(100) NOT NULL default '', PRIMARY KEY (category_id)); but I think the sequence needs be created first and if not inserts wont' increment the counter.
