Until we get to the bottom of this, please do *not* do the above.  In
this way, we can at least remove one variable.

YA truly amazing occurrence.  Please run Sysinternal's handle with the
above setup:

    $ handle -a -p ipc-daemon | fgrep Multi

Do you get the expected output (from my previous post)?
