If so, you may need to cast one of them.

e.g. SELECT COUNT(foo) FROM bar   GROUP BY CASE WHEN (? IS NOT NULL)                THEN thiscol::TEXT
ELSEthatcol         -- if the type of thatcol is TEXT           END;
