For some reason Cygwin's recv() is returning ENOTSOCK. Try using strace to glean more information: $ strace -o psql.log psql -h 127.0.0.1 template1 Is there anything interesting in psql.log? BTW, which Windows 2000 service pack are you using? Some other suggestions: 1. Try another machine (I have never seen this problem on various NT 4.0 and 2000 machines) 2.
