Did you upgrade your glibc to 2.2.4 on 7.1 box?

Also is 7.2 box a fresh install or upgrade from 7.1?

I have the same problem.  I find that
readline works on

-- fresh install of 7.2 box (which might be "updated")
-- fresh install of 7.1

It breaks on

-- 7.2 box which was upgraded from 7.1
-- 7.1 box updated with new glibc.
