Could you do...

UPDATE mytable SET mycolumn =
(
 SELECT myothercolumn
 FROM myothertable
 WHERE myothertable.primarykey = mytable.primarykey
)

Not sure how this works in PostgreSQL, but I do it all the time in
Oracle (note only one table definition in subselect)
