Is it possible to avoid a rule calling itself, as it were? i.e. CREATE TABLE test (testnumber float8,testid serial primary key); CREATE FUNCTION adjust(float8) RETURNS ' SELECT dpow(1.14,$1) AS result;' LANGUAGE 'SQL'; CREATE RULE testtest AS ON INSERT TO test DO INSTEAD INSERT INTO test (testnumber) VALUES (adjust(new.testnumber)); INSERT INTO test VALUES (2); now gets into an endless loop, which postgres intelligently breaks out of with an ERROR: What I want is just to make that substitution once! If possible I want to do this without rewriting my application to use a view of the table rather than the table itself...
