Make sure you also installed the main rpm. IOW, you want to have installed: postgresql postgresql-libs postgresql-server Now, as root, execute /etc/rc.d/init.d/postgresql start This script will create the initial database structure and start postmaster. Now, find the file README.rpm-dist, which, on RedHat 6.2 will be in /usr/doc/postgresql-7.1.1 Read this file, along with the main documentation, in HTML browsable form, in /usr/doc/postgresql-7.1.1/html -- the README.rpm-dist file will explain how to make postmaster be started on every boot up.
